What it is

A short, intentional break to step outside, breathe fresh air, and visually engage with natural light and surroundings. It is about breaking the screen trance and moving the body out of the position it has been held in.

The science

Exposure to natural light, especially in the morning, helps regulate our circadian rhythm. Looking at distant objects relaxes the eye muscles that become strained from close-up screen work.

Physical movement outside the building also elevates mood through a combination of light-triggered serotonin production, mild aerobic activity, and the visual and sensory variety of an outdoor environment.

Why use it

The body was not designed to remain still in a chair for hours. Even a ten-minute outdoor break can interrupt the physical and cognitive stagnation that builds through a morning of screen work.

How to do it

1

Leave your phone on your desk.

2

Step outside, even if it is just onto a balcony or by an open window.

3

Look at something far away (the horizon, clouds, or trees).

4

Take three slow breaths, noticing the temperature of the air.

5

Return indoors.

What to notice

Pay attention to the shift in your visual focus and how the change in temperature feels on your skin.

Health note

If you have limited mobility, simply sitting by a large, open window can provide similar benefits.

A note

Even on rainy or cold days, a brief exposure to the elements can be surprisingly grounding.
