Real Check-In
Connect beyond the surface.
What it is
Moving past the 'How are you?' / 'Fine' exchange to a more meaningful micro-connection with a partner, friend, or colleague.
The science
Strong social connections are one of the most reliable predictors of long-term health and wellbeing. Meaningful micro-interactions build relationship capital and foster a genuine sense of belonging.
Research consistently shows that the quality of social connection matters more than the quantity. Brief but meaningful exchanges are more restorative than extended but surface-level ones.
Why use it
The people we care about deserve more than automatic responses. A real check-in takes five minutes and can shift the quality of a relationship more than a long conversation where neither person was really present.
How to do it
Choose a moment when neither of you is rushing.
Ask a slightly deeper question, such as 'What has been on your mind lately?' or 'What was the best part of your week?'
Listen to the answer without interrupting or immediately offering advice.
Validate what they share.
What to notice
Notice the shift in their body language when they realise you are actually listening.
A note
It might feel awkward at first. Stick with it.
