Two-Minute Shift
Clear mental clutter quickly.
What it is
A rapid mental clearing exercise to offload looping thoughts onto paper, freeing up cognitive space for whatever is actually in front of you.
The science
The Zeigarnik effect states that people remember uncompleted tasks better than completed ones. Writing them down signals to the brain that the task is captured, reducing the cognitive load required to hold onto it.
The act of externalising thoughts, putting them somewhere outside the head, is one of the most reliable ways to reduce cognitive overload. The brain stops recycling the same concerns once it trusts they have been recorded.
Why use it
The mind loops when it does not trust itself to remember. Writing things down is not about being organised. It is about giving the brain permission to let go.
How to do it
Grab a pen and scrap paper.
Set a timer for two minutes.
Write down absolutely everything taking up space in your head right now.
When the timer goes off, stop.
Pick one thing to focus on next, or simply fold the paper away.
What to notice
Notice the physical sensation of lightness in your head once the looping thoughts are externalised.
A note
You do not have to solve the list. The goal is simply to get it out of your head.
